History of the Iowa Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council
Several individuals of the building industry in the Des Moines area began meeting in April of
2004 with the goal of building a coalition of USGBC members in the state of Iowa for the
purpose of creating an Iowa Chapter of the USGBC. This initial group of approximately 10-
12 individuals involved Des Moines area architects, engineers, landscape architects, the
Executive Vice President of AIA Iowa, a regional insurance representative, representatives
from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the University Architect for Iowa State
University, the Director of the Iowa Energy Center, and local and regional building
manufacturing representatives. This initial group contacted the USGBC and began working toward
organizing status as defined by the USGBC. In September 2004 a decision was made to
proceed with chapter formation and a letter of intent was sent to USGBC. Recognition as an
organizing chapter was given by USGBC on September 21, 2004.
Today the USGBC Iowa Chapter has more than 170 members. The chapter's membership is open and balanced and is comprised of leaders and visionaries from all segments of the building
industry, including product manufacturers, environmental organizations, building owners,
building professionals, utilities, government, research institutions, professional societies
and universities.
